This is a condition where an individual involuntarily tightens his neck and upper back muscles during work and relaxes after sometime.

CAUSES

*Poor posture while working

*Dissatisfaction over work and working environment

*Mental stress

SYMPTOMS

(a)Pain in the neck and upperback region while working and disappears after some time or when the patient stop working.

(b)Tighness over chest region

©Breathing difficulties in rare cases

DIAGNOSIS

There is no specific tests or radiological investigations.

Diagnosis is made through the history and with the physical symptoms.

TREATMENT

(a)An integrated approach which consists of "Relaxation therapies"such as

1.Alexander technique

2.Progressive muscle relaxation

3.Breathing exercises

(b)Yoga

(c)Biofeedback

(d)Cognitive behavioural therapy

(e)Myotherapy which includes releasing of trigger points and muscle tightness to relieve pain

(f)Some home exercises in the form of stretches and free movements of the joints.
